Judith Daams is a self-taught artist with a background in history who has specialized in painting animals. What began as a technical challenge soon evolved into a quest for tranquillity and control. Her earlier work focused on placing the animal at the centre of a minimalist but colourful setting, allowing viewers the freedom to project their own emotions onto the subject and find a sense of calm and connection. However, frustrated by international developments in recent years—and driven by an intense interest in international relations stemming from her academic background—the artist has now changed course, drawing inspiration from ancient fables and the storytelling power of animals.
In her recent work, she addresses sensitive issues head-on, unafraid to tackle political themes. Using a refined painting technique, she creates striking images of birds set against tense backdrops. Through the use of classical composition and lighting, she initially draws the viewer in with imagery that feels comfortable and familiar, only to subsequently jolt them awake, prompting them to question what they are actually seeing and what it signifies. The birds play an allegorical role, serving as national icons that symbolize their respective countries.
